Melissa (Missy) Mendietta's Obituary
Melissa (Missy) Mendietta, a devoted daughter, sister, cousin, mentor and protector to many, passed away on Thanksgiving night, November 28, 2024, at the age of 60. She leaves behind a legacy of servant leadership and profound love for her family and friends.
Missy grew up in Alice, Texas where she was a proud Alice Coyote, Class of 1982. She was a member of the Alice High School Marching Band. She graduated from Texas A&I where she was a part of the Mariachi Band. She also served as an athletic trainer and mentored several A&I students to become skilled in athletic training. She knew the importance of caring for athletes; in fact her next chapter involved becoming an elite football athlete. She later went to receive her graduate degree in Education, and worked in Administration for the Harris County Department of Education.
Missy was in the Inaugural Professional Women’s National Football Team where they won the first ever Superbowl Championship. The team was the Houston Energy and their season record was 12-0. Missy was one of the first women to own three Women’s National Football Superbowl rings.
She went on to enroll in the Police Academy of Lone Star College. Because of her stellar achievements she was offered a career in the police force of Lone Star College.
She then went on to protect Harris County Precinct 6 under Constable Sylvia Trevino where she was revered and respected by all of her colleagues and the community she served and protected.
Missy was a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo volunteer for 20 plus years, with the last 15 years served as a committee member with the Feed Store. She loved the Rodeo and the community around it. She also loved the Astros!!
Missy had a heart of gold as described by many who knew her, and was the textbook definition of social butterfly. She continually sent texts or calls to check on her family and friends. During times of crisis, such as Hurricane Harvey, Missy was instrumental in serving and caring for her Houston and Corpus Christi area family and friends.
Missy faced a cancer diagnosis with remarkable strength and determination, overcoming it with the unwavering support of her cherished friends and family.
Missy is now reunited in Heaven with her parents, Arnoldo and Eleanor (Chata) Mendietta. We are sure that she and Chata are up to no good up there in Heaven along with all of the other Barrera relatives!
Missy is survived by her sister, Marissa Mendietta (Charles Lott), her brother Arnold Mendietta (Tara), and her nephews Carlo, Andros, and Nolan Mendietta.
A public memorial will be held on December 14th, 2024, from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Hernandez Funeral Home, 2804 Fulton Street, Houston, Texas.
The family would like to thank each of you for your sincere calls and texts and for your presence in her life.
We will miss Missy very, very much. May God bless her courageous and caring soul.
